The insulating bricks are made of vermiculite, which is known for its high insulating properties. The vermiculite maintains a high fire temperature which ensures a cleaner burn. The bricks naturally wear down and must be replaced if cracks larger than 5mm in diameter occur or if they are worn to half their thickness. You can find the appropriate smoke baffle deflection plate
