Bereits 1742 wurde am Standort der heutigen Brennerei Whisky hergestellt. Die erste legale Brennerei wurde jedoch erst 1816 durch John Johnston gegrndet. Im Sden der Insel gelegen, in direkter Nhe zu Ardbeg und Laphroaig, produziert Lagavulin wie seine Nachbar rauchigen Single Malt Whisky. Der Name der Brennerei heit bersetzt soviel wie "die Mulde der Mhle".
